Care

A handmade rug asks for little, but a few consistent habits will keep it well for many years.

  1. 01

    Vacuuming

Vacuum regularly, in the direction of the pile. For wool, use suction only, or turn off the beater bar, which can pull at fibres. Avoid the fringe. New wool rugs shed for a while; this settles.

  2. 02

    Rotation and light

Rotate your rug every 6 to 12 months to spread wear and even out any change from daylight. Protect rugs from prolonged strong sun where you can.

  3. 03

    Spills

Blot, don't rub. Work from the outside in with a clean white cloth and a little cool water. Avoid household detergents and hot water. For silk, viscose and jute, blot dry and call a specialist.

  4. 04

    Professional cleaning

Use a specialist in handmade rugs every few years, and always for silk. Ask how dyes will be tested before washing.

  5. 05

    Storage

Clean before storing. Roll, don't fold, wrap in breathable cotton rather than plastic, and keep in a cool, dry, ventilated place.
