About Carprugs

Sustainability

Our principles and intentions. We will publish specific details only as they are verified.

Sustainability is a word that has been stretched until it can mean almost anything. We would rather use it carefully.

Carprugs is a new brand. We have not yet measured the environmental impact of our rugs across their full life, and we do not hold environmental certifications. We are therefore not in a position to make claims about outcomes, and we will not. What we can do is set out the principles that guide our decisions, and commit to publishing specific information as we verify it.

“Our principles and intentions.”
Sustainability

Principles

Durability first. The most responsible rug is often the one that lasts. We favour constructions and fibres that wear well, can be cleaned thoroughly and can be repaired. A hand-knotted wool rug, well cared for, can serve for many years.

Natural and renewable fibres. Most of our rugs are made principally from wool, cotton, silk or jute. These are natural fibres, though each has its own environmental considerations, from land and water use to processing. We do not treat "natural" as a synonym for "sustainable".

Considered dyeing. We ask our partners how dyes are sourced and how dye effluent is handled. We do not assume that natural dyes are automatically better or synthetic dyes automatically worse; both depend on how they are used.

Made to order where it makes sense. Making some pieces to order helps avoid producing rugs that may never find a home.

Care and repair. We provide clear guidance on caring for rugs, and we intend to help customers find cleaning and repair services, so that rugs stay in use longer.

Packaging. We aim to use packaging that protects rugs adequately while minimising unnecessary material, and we will review this as we grow.

Questions we ask

When we work with partners, we ask about fibre sources, spinning and dyeing processes, water and effluent management, energy use and waste. Not every question has a complete answer yet, and not every partner can answer every question at once. We will be honest about the gaps.

What we will publish

As our work develops, we intend to publish:

  • the fibres and dye approaches used in each collection, as we are able to confirm them;
  • what we have verified about our supply chain, and how;
  • any certifications we obtain, with the scope of each;
  • where we have fallen short, and what we plan to do about it.

Details will be published as they are verified. Until then, we would rather say too little than too much.

What we will not say

We will not describe our rugs or our business as carbon neutral, eco-friendly, zero-waste or similar unless we can support the claim with evidence and explain it clearly. We will not use vague imagery or language to suggest outcomes we have not achieved.

Your questions

If you have a question about the materials or making of a particular rug, please ask. We will answer as fully as we can, and tell you plainly where our knowledge ends.
