What does hand-knotted mean?
A hand-knotted rug is made by tying individual knots of yarn around vertical warp threads on a loom, row by row, with horizontal wefts locking each row in place. The pile is part of the foundation, and there is no glued backing. It is the most time-consuming method of rug making and one of the most durable.
What is the difference between hand-knotted, hand-tufted and flat-woven?
Hand-knotted rugs are knotted by hand on a loom. Hand-tufted rugs are made by punching yarn through a cloth and securing it with a backing. Flat-woven rugs, such as dhurries, have no pile; the pattern is woven into the structure. Our journal explains each in detail.
Why does my rug show different shades of the same colour?
This is abrash: natural variation in tone caused by dye batches and yarn. It is a characteristic of handmade rugs, not a defect, and it gives a field of colour depth and movement.
Why is my rug slightly different from the stated size?
Handmade rugs can vary by a few centimetres from their stated dimensions, because of the weaving, washing and finishing processes. This is normal.
How do I choose the right size?
In most living rooms, leave around 30 to 45 cm of floor visible around the rug and place at least the front legs of your seating on it. In a dining room, the rug should extend around 60 to 75 cm beyond the table so chairs stay on it when pulled out. Our size guide explains more, and marking the size on your floor with tape is always worthwhile.
Can I order a custom size or colour?
Many of our designs can be made to order in custom sizes and colourways. Made-to-order rugs typically take 10 to 14 weeks. Custom and made-to-order pieces are final sale.
Do you offer samples?
Yes. Samples are available for many collections, and we recommend them if you are choosing a fibre or colour. Trade members have access to a wider range.
Is delivery free?
Delivery within India is complimentary. International delivery is quoted at checkout. White-glove delivery is available on request in select metros.
How long will delivery take?
In-stock rugs are usually dispatched within 3 to 7 working days. Made-to-order pieces typically take 10 to 14 weeks to make before dispatch.
Can I return a rug?
In-stock rugs in standard sizes can be returned within 14 days of delivery in original condition. Made-to-order, custom and bespoke pieces are final sale. Please see our returns policy for full details.
Are your prices inclusive of GST?
Yes. Prices shown in Indian rupees include GST unless stated otherwise.
My new wool rug is shedding. Is that normal?
Yes. New wool rugs shed loose fibres for a period. Regular vacuuming, with suction only and no beater bar, will reduce this over time.
How should I care for my rug?
Vacuum regularly without a beater bar, rotate every 6 to 12 months, blot spills rather than rubbing, and use a professional rug cleaner for deep cleaning. Silk rugs should always be cleaned professionally.
Who makes your rugs?
Our rugs are made by skilled weavers in India. As a new brand, we are building our partnerships carefully, and we will publish verified information about our makers as it becomes available. On the demonstration site, maker details are illustrative.
