A rug is one of the largest objects in a room and, often, one of the longest-lived. It deserves to be thought about carefully. These are the principles that guide how we design, describe and sell our rugs.
“Restraint, clarity and respect for the hand: the principles that shape every Carprugs rug.”
Begin with the room
We design for rooms, not for showrooms. A rug must hold its own on a floor, among furniture, in changing light, for years. That means considering scale and proportion first, then colour and pattern. It means favouring designs that settle a room rather than compete with it.
Restraint is a form of confidence
We are drawn to rugs that say one thing well. A single, carefully judged colour. A trellis drawn at the right scale. A field of undyed wool with nothing added. Where we work with rich, traditional pattern, we look for balance and clarity rather than quantity.
Respect the hand
A handmade rug carries the marks of its making: the gentle banding of abrash, the slight variation in dimension, the fringe that is not perfectly even. We see these as the natural character of handmade work, not as defects to be hidden. We would rather explain them clearly than sell an idea of perfection that no handmade object can honestly offer.
Say what is true
We describe construction, fibre and dye plainly. Hand-knotted means hand-knotted. A plant-based viscose is described as such, not as silk. We keep historical references general and well established, and we do not claim lineage, awards, certifications or outcomes that we cannot support. When we do not know something, we say so.
Make things that last
The most sustainable rug is often the one that does not need replacing. We favour durable constructions and good fibres, and we give clear guidance on care, rotation and repair, so that a rug can serve for many years and, ideally, be handed on.
Work in partnership
The skill in a handmade rug belongs to the people who make it. We aim to treat our weaving partners as collaborators: to learn from their knowledge, to plan orders and payments responsibly, and to ask the right questions about conditions and materials. We will publish what we learn as we are able to verify it.
Be useful
We want our journal, guides and conversations to be genuinely helpful, whether or not they lead to a sale. If a smaller rug, a different fibre or a simple rug pad would serve you better, we will say so.
In short
Design for the room. Choose restraint. Respect the hand. Tell the truth. Make things that last. These are simple ideas; living by them is the work.
